Were

Werewolves and weres are dimorphic shapeshifters: creatures with two different forms (though they occasionally have one or more 'intermediate' forms), between which they switch either deliberately or according to an involuntary trigger, sometimes the light of a full moon.

Wereism or lycanthropy (the latter properly only includes weres who change between humanoid and wolf forms) can be a natural feature of a species or can be transmitted as a virus. It is not usually both.
