Werewolves and
weres are dimorphic shapeshifters: creatures with more than one form (though they occasionally have one or more 'intermediate' forms), between which they switch either deliberately or according to an involuntary trigger, sometimes the light of a full moon.
Wereism or lycanthropy (the latter properly only refers to werewolves) can be a natural feature of a species or can be transmitted as a virus. It is not ususally both.
