As I personally dislike the all-too-common occurrence in fantasy geography of putting the good, pretty, wise guys and cultures in the west, and the nomadic, strange, backwards people in the east. Indeed, the western continent is where the strange cultures originated from. In the east, on the continent of Arken (a name which unfairly refers to the whole world, as used by the eastern folk) was the cradle of scholars, Vánan, and the centre of high culture and economy. (It's just a little pet peeve of mine, but I need to have it my way.)
Arken was originally to be a high fantasy world, but I changed my mind. Instead it has some budding technology, which is in no way in conflict with magic - save for attitudes of the practitioners of either. I have yet to determine the level of technology, but it's not near the steam engine yet, and printing at the very least is in relatively wide use - relatively, because reading is yet a skill reserved for the scholarly. I suspect there may well be tecnomagical contraptions, because there is no need for Arkenians to follow our technological development, and they may achieve better (or at least more interesting) results by powering machines with magical means.
